Choosing an estate
planning attorney

Estate laws vary from state to state. We strongly recommend preparing your estate plan with the assistance of an experienced estate planning attorney.

Get a recommendation

If you don't yet have an estate planning attorney, ask your friends, family, or accountant for a trusted recommendation from someone they've used directly.

Questions to ask

  • Have you practised estate planning law for at least five years?
  • Is at least 75% of your practice devoted to estate planning?
  • Are you certified in estate planning where applicable?
  • Do you carry professional liability insurance?
  • Do you offer a free initial consultation?
  • Do you bill on a fee-for-service or hourly basis?

Prepare ahead of time

Answering these questions before your first meeting can save you significant time and money:

  • Who will inherit your assets?
  • Who will care for your minor children?
  • Who manages your finances if you are incapacitated?
